How payment plan reminders work

Split an invoice into instalments and remind the customer before each one is due.

Updated 7 October 2026

A payment plan splits an unpaid invoice into instalments with their own due dates. While a plan is active, every other invoice policy stops for that invoice, and only payment plan reminders apply.

Payment plans need a Pro plan. See Plans and billing.

Creating a plan

First give the group a configuration. See Set up payment plans for a group. Then open the invoice and choose Create Payment Plan. Set the number of instalments, their dates and amounts. The customer sees the schedule on the invoice page in the portal. The steps are in Create or remove a payment plan on an invoice.

Payments made in Xero or QuickBooks are matched to instalments as they come in, including Stripe payments taken through the portal. See How payments work.

Reminders

Open a group, go to its Policies tab and choose Add Payment Plan Reminder.

  • When: days before or after each instalment’s due date.
  • Template: a Payment Plan Reminder type email template. Merge tags can insert the instalment amount and date and the remaining balance.

A reminder is sent for each instalment in turn. The policy is checked again at send time, so an instalment that has already been paid gets no reminder.

Notifications

Users with the Payment Plan notification turned on (My Account) are emailed when a plan is created.
